Did you know that Marvel Universe Live! Age Of Heroes is at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento this weekend? The show opened last night and runs through Sunday, September 17, 2017 and if you’ve got kids who LOVE Marvel Superheroes, you need to take them to this event!
Inspired Imperfection received complimentary tickets from the Marvel Universe Live! producer Feld Entertainment to check out the show on opening night and share an honest review with you.
Parking downtown can be a pain in the butt, so I reserved and purchased a parking spot right across the street that afternoon. SacPark made the process super easy and all I had to do was offer the parking attendant the QR code generated. He scanned it, let us in the parking garage, and we were parked in less than five minutes. Plus, we parked directly across the street from Golden 1 Center!
As we made our way to Will Call to pick up our tickets, we saw TONS of little girls and boys dressed up in superhero costumes. It was adorable and it made me wish that my kids were that little again… mine are now 11 and 14, and growing way too fast.
As soon as we stepped inside Golden 1 Center, we were bombarded with Souvenir booths, promotional items and branded snacks for sale, and staff walking around trying to get us to purchase a $20 program. And, the lines were INSANE. This isn’t our first rodeo though, so we quickly bypassed the lunacy of the main entrance and worked our way around the arena concourse to a far less busy snack stand near our seats. Here we grabbed popcorn, cotton candy with a Groot mask, candy, and some bottled waters, before heading to our seats.
Marvel Universe Live! Age of Heroes Story
We reached our seats just in time for the show to begin and Dr. Strange, master of the mystic arts, to take the stage and tell us a story about the telling us a story about the Wand Of Watoomb.
Age of Heroes sees 25+ characters from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe come together for one action-packed, legendary battle — a race against time to recover the Wand of Watoomb before it falls into Loki’s hands. This ancient artifact holds immeasurable mystical power and would allow Loki to achieve his eternal quest to crown himself ruler of Asgard and Earth. Their journey sparks new feuds with old foes, pitting student against mentor, sister against sister and brother against brother.
The Guardians Of The Galaxy Take The Stage
In this scene we watch as Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot battle against both Yondu and Nebula who both want the Wand Of Watoomb. This battle has fireworks, bright lights, explosions, flips, and special effects that wow the audience! Nebula ultimately wins and disappears with the unstable wand that could destroy the entire universe, and the Guardians realize they must go after her.
Joining the Guardians in outer space with the Avengers on Earth in a single story line is no small feat, but Age Of Heroes does it seamlessly with Dr. Strange as the anchor.
The Avengers Join The Battle
Scene two opens in New York City. The Federal Reserve Bank is being robbed by the Green Goblin and Spider-Man is coming to the rescue. But he gets side-tracked with other villians like Black Cat, Electro, Rhino, and The Lizard. Luckily Captain America, Wasp, Black Widow, and Black Panther show up to help, along with Iron Man and Thor.
After the battle, Dr. Strange arrives on Earth to call upon Spider-Man and the Avengers to join the battle and help retrieve the wand. They split up into groups and leave in search for Nebula and the Wand Of Watoomb.
The Search For Nebula And The Wand Of Watoomb
The Guardians take the stage again in their spaceship as they make a plan to visit the Collector and find the Cosmic Eye, which can find anything and transport people to any item. It’s their way to find and reach Nebula and the wand.
Meanwhile, at the Avengers base Iron Man reaches out to Bruce Banner for help, but Loki shows up and captures Banner, making it impossible for him to turn into the Hulk. He performs mind control on Banner, discovers where the Avengers are going, and evil laughs his way off stage.
The Mythical City of K’un-Lun
Suddenly the audience finds itself transported to K’un-Lun, the mystical home of the Iron Fist, and one of the Seven Capital Cities of Heaven. We see some type of celebration and beautiful acrobats performing on ribbons of fabric hanging from the ceiling that is interrupted by Loki, followed by Thor, Iron Man, Wasp, and Dr. Strange.
A battle ensues against Loki, stone soldiers, and a dragon blowing green fire. The Iron Fist arrives and joins in the fight to protect K’un-Lun. He Ultimately defeats the dragon with a giant punch and the battle against Loki continues.
Suddenly Nebula arrives and is confused. They plead with her to surrender the wand, but she refuses and disappears, and Loki captures Thor (without his hammer) as the scene ends and intermission begins.
Travel To Asgard And The Savage Land
Age Of Heroes resumed in Asgard on the Rainbow Bridge. Loki captured Thor and Bruce Banner, then captured Wasp and Dr. Strange too! The scene then shifts to Black Widow, Captain American, Spider-Man, and Black Panther in the Savage Land, a jungle with dinosaurs.
Thanos’ Chitauri army, who is working for Loki, arrive and a battle with Captain America, Black Widow, and even Spider-Man on Motorcycles begins. The best part of this scene was the full flip Spider-Man did in the air on a motorcycle. Everyone around us was oohing and ahhing over that stunt!
A Temple is then discovered in the side of the Volcano they are on and the scene ends with Black Widow and Captain America riding motorcycles up a ramp and flying through the air into the cave up high! Hoots and hollers and cheers could be heard around the arena after that!
Next, we’re inside the ancient temple and a man bating on a drum with fire sticks descends slowly from the ceiling, as other fire drummers appear below, and dancers come out on stage to perform with fire batons and fans coasted in flames. This was amazing!
Captain America, Spider-Man, and Black Widow show up just before Nebula. The wand flies up in the air and a fight begins between the Avengers, Nebula, and the Chitauri who all want the wand. Spider-Man retrieves the wand, Nebula runs away, and the Avengers grab the Wand Of Watoomb together to transport themselves back to the Avengers Base just as the temple collapses and the volcano erupts.
The show then shifts back to The Guardians Of The Galaxy who are visiting the Collector’s museum in search of the Cosmic Eye. Unfortunately, Yondu shows up. He was hired by the Collector to capture Rocket for his collection. Yobu calls Rocket a rodent and a big battle begins between the Guardians and Yondu and his men.
The Guardians get the eye, but they set off an alarm and accidentally let some monsters out of their cages who begin to attack! The Guardians escape, but Yondu and his men are left to fight the creatures alone.
The Finale In Asgard
Back in Asgard, Loki has the some of the Avengers trapped.
Captain America, Black Widow, Spider-Man, and Black Panther arrive to fight and rescue them, but they are trapped by Loki too! Then the Guardians arrive and are also trapped by Loki who gets the Wand Of Watoomb… and it seems as if Loki has finally won.
But out of nowhere, Thor gets his hammer back and uses it to disarm Loki’s traps and frees all of the superheros. It isn’t strong enough, however, to break through the force field surrounding the wand and both side, superheroes and villains, prepare for battle. Ultimately, all of the superheroes and the Guardians are able to send their powers to Iron Man to supercharge his arc reactor, which he uses to help the superheroes win the battle.
This also stops the mind control being used on Bruce Banner, who then transforms into the Hulk. Hulk, larger than life, takes the stage amidst cheers from the audience, and knocks down a few bad guys, before doing the Hulk Smash on the wand’s chamber.
Finally Dr. Strange retrieves the Wand Of Watoomb, Loki is banished to the dungeons of Asgard, and the universe is saved once again.
An Honest Review
We’ve been to Monster Jam®, Disney On Ice, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey®, and now Marvel Universe LIVE!, and while I;d say that all of the other shows are great of kids of all ages, even teenagers and adults, this one was a little different.
The Superheroes and Villians are the draw. They are why the kids come dressed in costumes and masks, why everyone is wearing the t-shirts, and why there is a big buzz of excitement in the air. They are why we were so excited to receive free tickets to opening night to review the show!
There was Superhero action, fight scenes, and thrills, and we saw acrobatics, motorcycle tricks, flips, fire, pyrotechnics, and lots of smoke. Immersive video projection helped create the scenes and transport us across the universe from the fantastical Savage Land and K’un-Lun to Asgard and New York City.
Overall, we had a blast! We stuffed our faces with cotton candy, popcorn, and candy, we were entertained and wowed by pyrotechnics, acrobatics, and motorcycle stunts — and we’d totally go again, especially because tickets are pretty affordable!
Unlike the other shows, I don’t think Age Of Heroes is a best bet for kids over the age of 11 or 12. My son brought a friend with him and they’re both 11. They enjoyed the show, loved the fireworks, fire, fight scenes, and motorcycle stunts — and of course the Marvel Superheroes. But my daughter (who is 14) and I both thought is was really slow moving. We all agreed that there was a lot of standing and talking and explaining the story, where we would have loved to have seen more action and adventure.
With that said, were were surrounded by families with younger kids and they were going absolutely CRAZY throughout the entire show. Every time a Superhero came on stage, they shouted their name and cheered. They rooted for them during the battles, boo’ed the villains, and many were even standing up jumping up and down! It was pretty cute, especially when they were also in costume!
If your kids are around 11 years old or under, Marvel Universe Live! Age Of Heroes is a fantastic and entertaining show that we highly recommend you get tickets to ASAP! Then go have a fun Superhero adventure this weekend!
