Can I tell you a secret?
I’ve never seen any of the Shrek movies. I’ve seen bits and pieces, trailers, and maybe some clips… but not a full movie. All I knew was that the movie was about an ogre who finds love. So when Julie Gallaher of Sacramento Top 10 and Get On The Map reached out and invited Natalie and I to preview the show as part of the #BroadwaySacramentoAmbassadors, I was intrigued.
Shrek the Musical kicks off the 69th summer season of Broadway At Music Circus today and runs through Sunday, June 16, 2019.
Based on the Oscar-winning animated film, Shrek the Musical brings the beloved swamp-dwelling ogre Shrek and his trusty sidekick Donkey to life. When his swamp is overrun by fairy tale creatures banished from the Kingdom of Duloc by Lord Farquaad, Shrek embarks on a life-changing journey to rescue the feisty Princess Fiona from a tower guarded by a fire-breathing dragon, deliver her to Farquaad for marriage, and get his swamp back. Along the way, he meets Donkey, farts a lot, and falls in love.
Fun for adults and kids alike, this Tony-winning adventure, with songs from Jeanine Tesori and a book by David Lindsay-Abaire, is a story about acceptance, proving that beauty is truly in the eye of the ogre.
Shrek the Musical has themes of not judging a person by what they look like on the outside, friendship, and acceptance. During the course of the show, Shrek, Fiona, and the Fairy Tale creatures learn that the things that make them different are the things to be proud of.
We LOVED this musical! After a dinner of Chando’s Tacos across the street, it was a fantastic start of another fabulous season at Music Circus!
From the creative set, the brightly colored costumes, and the amazing makeup to the silly potty humor, ogre farts, and ridiculous Lord Farquaad, Natalie and I were laughing our heads off throughout the entire performance. And of course, as musical fans, we LOVED the singing and dancing. The incredible talent Broadway Sacramento consistently delivers never fails to impress.
If you’re looking for something fun to do with the family, or you’re looking for a something fun to do for Father’s Day, look no further. Shrek the Musical is the perfect choice for every member of your family.
