We drove past the yellowish hills of Mustard Canyon several times while heading out to Father Crowely Vista, Darwin Falls, Wildrose Charcoal Kilns, Mosaic Canyon, Aguereberry Point and Eureka Mine, Salt Creek, Stovepipe Wells Village, and the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, but didn’t realize there was a road that went through the center of them!
- Mustard Canyon is a canyon in the middle of the Death Valley floor lined hills of with yellowish, mustard-colored dirt and rocks and absent of all plant life.
- Mustard Canyon Drive is a one-way, dirt road that starts at the Harmony Borax Works parking area, and heads north, before ending at CA-190.
Driving Mustard Canyon
We were on our way to explore the newly opened Keane Wonder Mine and Mill and the one way drive through Mustard Canyon was on the way. Unlike Mosaic Canyon, Golden Canyon, and Titus Canyon, which have steep towering walls, Mustard Canyon is lined with low-lying, colorful hills colored by salt and oxidized minerals.
Know Before You Go
- Mustard Canyon Drive starts at the Harmony Borax Works parking area, and heads north, before ending at CA-190 in Death Valley National Park.
- It is a relatively smooth, short dirt road that is easily passable in a sedan.
