Sugared Puff Pastry Dessert Waffles

Sugared Puff Pastry Dessert Waffles

Mmmmm dessert. I’ve used puff pastry in many desserts over the years, but I had never thought to bake the puff pastry dough in the waffle iron until I clicked through a link on Facebook to a slideshow-style blog post about testing foods — like pretzels, hot dogs, bagels, croissants, and puff pastry — in a waffle iron. I think it was on the Bon Appétit site, but I’m not sure. I didn’t save the link and I can’t find it now.

All I remember is that puff pastry can be cooked in a waffle iron and that’s enough for me.

We hadn’t gone grocery shopping in a while, we were craving dessert, and we were raiding the refrigerator, freezer, and pantry to see what we could make. When we found the puff pastry and about half a container of ice cream, it was on. I remembered that blog post and decided that we were going to make Puff Pastry Waffles and cover them in sugar.

The great thing about puff pastry is that it defrosts fairy quickly in the refrigerator and it doesn’t make a big mess in the waffle iron. Once defrosted, I unfolded the puff pastry sheets, rolled them out on the counter, and while the waffle iron was preheating, cut them into small circles using a round cookie cutter.

We always make large waffles and use it as a base for toppings, and this time I wanted to make a bunch of small waffles so I could pile them up on each plate.

Once the waffle iron was ready, I placed the puff pastry circles in the waffle iron and cooked them for 3-4 minutes, or until the puff pastry began turning a golden brown. As they finished cooking I transferred the Puff Pastry Waffles to a cooling rack.

Dessert Waffles Made From Puff Pastry and Dipped In Sugar

Once the puff pastry waffles were cool, we brushed them with melted butter and generously sprinkled each one with sugar. We then flipped them over and did the same to the other side, so both sides of the waffles were coated with sugar.

Once the Sugared Puff Pastry Waffles were ready, I piles three on each plate, topped them with vanilla ice cream, and drizzled chocolate sauce and caramel sauce all over the top. The desserts were gorgeous and the flaky, airy puff pastry tasted great with the sugar, ice cream, and sauces.

This is definitely one dessert waffle recipe that I’ll be making again in the summer. These would be great to serve with ice cream at a summer barbecue, as the Sugared Puff Pastry Waffles can be made in advance or even made in bulk.
